Day 5 blog:San Ignacio, Belize – Market Day

BED BUGS! I knew it! These little buggers attacked in my sleep like ninjas! I have no less than 20 red spots on my legs and ankles. They itch. Real bad. I go to the front desk and tell them we are leaving. Nope. Paid through a 3rd party on the Internet. Can’t leave and get a refund. Say what?! I show them my legs. They seem unimpressed. I show them again. Nothing. I had thoughts of showing them a third time, but feel it might be overkill. They say they have never had bedbugs. I think I may have changed that. Bummer. They offer to put us in another room. And comp dinner. I consider my lack of options and take the deal.

We head into town for market day. Its always a good time. You can buy anything from vegetables to a new puppy. Way better than Target! The minute we enter, we are approached by kids. “Do you want to buy chicken?” It hot and it looks like they have been walking around with it for hours. No, thanks. “Do you want to buy bracelets” Nope. They keep following us for a bit and then decide to latch on to a youth group from Michigan. They don’t buy the chicken, either.

A man approaches from the bench. He says he is the reincarnation of St. Valentine. He says it is a curse. He sees people’s aura. Jake is blue. I am green. He doesn’t know what they mean. He says he wants to rehearse poetry. He will do it for $1. Sweet. Best purchase of the day. It was excellent. Pleasantly surprised. As he leaves, he mentions that he “may be wanted by the law” and made me promise that we never met. I agree. It’s too bad for him that he’s in our video. I chuckle. Check out the video. Please don’t show it to the Belize police. I made a promise. After a day of great food (pupusa sandwiches, tamales, and horchata) and fun bartering, we set back towards our hotel to change rooms and enjoy the free dinner. It was a good day. That evening, as Jake was sitting on his bed editing video, he says his legs itch. I laugh… Silly bed bugs.
